Open PhD and Postdoc positions

Three PhD positions and two postdoctoral positions are available in the Alessio lab. These positions form the core of the ERC project, SPINOCCHIO, “A new quantum chemical approach to spins on surfaces.”

Depending on fit, successful candidates may contribute to one or more of the following research programmes:

1) To investigate the effect of the environment on the magnetic behavior of spins on surfaces, we will develop a new periodic quantum embedding that combines equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOM-CC) theory with periodic DFT (pbcEOM-CC).

2) To quantify spin-phonon couplings of spins on surfaces—the bottleneck to modeling spin relaxation—we will develop a new approach using pbcEOM-CC and a state-interaction treatment of the spin-spin, spin-orbit, and Zeeman interactions.

3) To develop new optical cycles for achieving optical addressability of individual spins on surfaces, we will investigate the interplay between optical excitations and both radiative and non-radiative decay pathways within the pbcEOM-CC framework.

4) To enable a cost-effective treatment of magnetic exchange interactions in surface spin lattices, we will employ a coarse-grained strategy and build effective Hamiltonians working in a model subspace from pbcEOM-CC wave functions. This strategy, combined with the static and dynamic description of adsorbed spins, will guide the bottom-up, atom-by-atom preparation and control of molecular quantum devices.
